....(continued)....
He looked at the monitor again. He read the mail once more, re-read it and sat back looking blankly at the insensitive machine in front of him. What insensitive machine! In fact, some people are even more insensitive. She knew what he felt for her..He had seen it in her eyes and in her talks. His mailbox was flooding now. He saw everybody else’s replies in ‘Reply To All’, asking her who the lucky guy was, how did it happen, when did it happen, when would she give throw a party and introduce him to them etc etc. He hated everybody! How could they be so happy and so selfish when he was in so much pain.
The latest mail from her read as,
“Calm down folks! All your queries will be answered in detail :) at lunch time see you all sharp at 1:00pm in cube number 101.”
He looked at the watch, 12:30! He had just half an hour to prepare himself. He couldn’t act like a coward. He would go ahead and wish her. He kept back that card he had made, in the lower most drawer right in the end. He wasn’t sure about what to say. He couldn’t have said,”Hey! That’s great news. I’m so happy for you.”He wouldn’t say that because he didn’t feel that. He felt terrible. But, he had the right to know about this sudden twist in the tale. He decided to simply confront her and ask her directly. May be she didn’t do this willingly, maybe she was doing it all under some pressure, like some promise his dad had made to a friend of his in her childhood or maybe it was her old and ill grandmother’s wish to see her dressed as a bride, getting married to some NRI guy or may be all this was just a dream; he wished!
He heard a few noises at a distance, coming from the direction her desk was. The clock read 1 :15.So,they were all there, wishing her, teasing her, congratulating her. He could visualize her, her regular sweet smile, blushing, showing off her pretty ring in her cute little finger; the same finger which when accidentally touched his hand, sent shivers down his spine. He almost slapped himself back to reality and got up from his seat. Every step towards her seemed more difficult than the previous one. People were gathered around her laughing, some complaining, and some even making disappointing faces. Nobody seemed to be congratulating her. Her close friend even hit her jokingly. He was confused, curious and puzzled at the same time. He moved quicker, closer towards her. Her eyes were searching for something ……or was it “someone”. She looked at him and the search ended right there.
She looked at him, observing his facial expressions, trying to read his mind. Almost everybody had left by then. He felt that he didn’t have the courage to look at her hand. He was simply looking in her deep brown eyes. Her mischievous smile suggested that something was fishy. Breaking the awkward silence, she flashed her finger in front of him and said, “You took away my scissors that day right, I was trying to cut a sheet with a blade and cut my finger.” A band-aid was nicely wrapped around the “disputed” finger. A voice echoed in his mind, “thanks to somebody….”,so that poor somebody was HIM since he had forgotten to give back her scissors;”the 3rd finger of my left hand isn’t vacant anymore.” Sure it wasn’t. There was a band aid there! She loved playing this game of words and he always fell in her traps. Why couldn’t he guess! She had always been a prankster and he actually loved her for the cute little naughty things she always did. He got too full of emotions to be able to say anything. With almost tears in his eyes, he told her, “You know what! I HATE YOU!” She simply smiled and said, “And do you know what, I love you …a lot…” :)
